Dr. Carrie Barber, DNP, CNM, Ob/Gyn NP is the founder and principal medical legal consultant of Barber Medical Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC. Dr. Barber has a wealth of clinical, hospital administrative, and team building experience which positions her well to successfully serve as the principal consultant at Barber Medical Legal Nurse Consulting, LLC. Dr. Barber offers unique medical, nursing and hospital administrative expertise that gives your medical case a competitive edge. Dr. Barber collaborates with both plaintiff, and defense attorneys on medical-related cases nationally.
She earned her Associate in Applied Science, Cum Laude, at Adirondack Community College in New York State. Her clinical experience spans the breadth of long-term care, medical-surgical, orthopedic, pre-operative, intra-operative, post-operative, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn nursing. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing, with a specialty in Nurse Midwifery from the Medical University of South Carolina. She worked as a full time, full scope Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) in both the inpatient, and outpatient settings prior to transitioning into hospital administration. While working as a labor and delivery nursing director, she worked as a per diem CNM and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the Medical University of South Carolina. During her tenure as Nursing Director, she demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring care was rendered according to current standards. She was successful in leading multi-specialty groups of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in rendering care according to current evidence-based standards. Additionally, Dr. Barber facilitated multi-specialty quality, and performance improvement initiatives, and new program implementation. She was integral in implementing a hospital-based midwifery program that transformed women’s health care delivery, promoted positive birth outcomes, and patient satisfaction. She was also successful in leading the organization to be awarded Blue Distinction for Maternity Care, demonstrating expertise, and a commitment to quality, evidence-based care. Dr. Barber also served as an Assistant Professor at Vermont State University where she taught for the undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, the graduate Master of Science in Nursing program and the Master of Business Administration program of study. She taught Obstetrical, Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing (Women and Reproductive Health), Healthcare and Social Policy, and Nursing Leadership and Management (Transitions to Professional Practice).
Dr. Barber is an active member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), American Hospital Association (AHA), American Nurses Association (ANA), American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM), Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), and National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (NACLNC).
She is a clinically active certified nurse midwife with a subspecialty certification from the National Certification Corporation (NCC) in Electronic Fetal Monitoring. Dr. Barber practices at a Level III perinatal center offering obstetrical triage, intrapartum, and postpartum management. She also serves as a volunteer on the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Research Advisory Panel.
